Reading tonight's Moon

The Moon has no light of its own — what you see is sunlight reflected off the half facing the Sun. As the Moon orbits Earth, the slice of that lit half we can see grows and shrinks over about 29.5 days. The disc above draws exactly that: the percentage tells you how much is illuminated, and the shape shows which way it's headed.

Waxing or waning?

A waxing Moon is growing toward full, lit on the right in the northern hemisphere; a waning Moon is shrinking toward new, lit on the left. The four turning points — New, First Quarter, Full and Last Quarter — split the cycle into the eight phases most calendars name. The Moon phases guide goes deeper on each.

Phase, sign, and your chart

Tonight's phase is the same for everyone; what it means depends on where it lands in your chart. The Moon's current sign, shown above, colours the mood of the next couple of days for all of us — but a full Moon on your own Sun or Moon is a different event entirely. Find your personal Moon with the Moon sign calculator, or see the whole sky in the birth chart calculator.

Moon phase FAQ

About tonight's Moon.

How is this moon phase calculated?

It reads the Moon’s exact angle from the Sun the moment you open the page, using a high-accuracy lunar model, and draws the lit portion from that. It is computed live in your browser — not a picture on a schedule — so it always matches the real sky.

What are the eight moon phases?

New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent — the cycle the Moon runs through about every 29.5 days. The Moon phases guide explains what each one has traditionally meant.

What does the Moon sign have to do with the phase?

They are two different things. The phase is how lit the Moon is (its angle from the Sun); the Moon sign is which zodiac sign it sits in right now. This page shows both. To find the Moon sign in your birth chart instead, use the Moon sign calculator.

Is the full Moon tracker in the app?

Yes. The StarBind app tracks the phase, sign, void-of-course hours and — crucially — what tonight’s Moon means against your own chart, with a push only when the sky does something that actually touches your placements.
